March 29 is Blog Action Day for Education

his week was marked by several student actions that successfully prevented moves to make education less accessible. Among the policies that were either delayed or prevented are:

  • an almost-2000% tuition hike in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines
  • approval of tuition hike proposals in most of the 233 private schools that violated consultation guidelines

However, many issues continue to affect the Filipino youth’s right to a quality and accessible education, such as the continued implementation of forced graduation fees, and the ‘no permit, no exam’ policy, as well as tuition and other fee increases in private universities.

On Monday, March 29, students will again take to the streets to demand an emergency budget allocation for education and the prevention of any and all tuition and other fee increases for the coming school year. We in the KABATAAN Online Team invite you to show your support, both in the streets and online.

That’s why we invite you to take part in our Blog Action Day on Education this Mar.29.

Here’s how you can participate: write a blog entry on the theme “Education is a Right” on Monday (or prepare one before and just post it on that day).

You can write about the present state of our education system, and how well (or unwell) is the youth’s right to a quality and accessible education being implemented. You can write about the conditions in your school, or your personal struggles with regards to finishing your studies.

You can also write about your opinion on the PUP & UP protests, the issues surrounding the events, or even a personal narrative if you were able to participate. You can choose to write about the importance of education and the education system to Filipinos and the Phil. society in general.

After writing your entry, post a link to this page. Also, (especially if you are blogging on a social network like Facebook or Friendster) post the link to your entry at this page’s Comments section. This way, we’ll be able to monitor how many bloggers are participating and we can thank those who did. And don’t forget to insert this blog button into your entry with the following code

Education is a right. Let’s all stand up for our rights on March 29.

Run. Run. Reach the end.

Been very busy since this sem started, more when I decided to run for the university student council. Yes, quite a 360 degree change of plans for me. My mom knows that I am graduating supposedly, but seeing the need for a change and the need to re-orient the students on my college, I opted for a position as the CHE representative. Not an easy decision for me, not a burden too. I knew quite well even before I settled with such decision, this requires too much of a sacrifice. My one year extension in academics is one thing that can happen if I will win this coming election. My stipend therefore should be shouldered by no other than me. I don’t want to get allowance from my parents anymore. I sacrificed my membership in Kontra-Gapi, meaning no out-of-towns anymore. No future gigs, no future concerts. I needed to choose and know my priorities well. Events in my life such as these make me realize what my capabilities really are. Very menial at times that I torture my self with inconsistent and tedious physical work and mental stress, but I know quite this will pay off in the end.

I just want the people’s support. That’s all.

Ito’y isang napakamakabuluhan at napapanahong pag-uusap.

HATID SA INYO NG KABATAAN PARTYLIST.

NONE AT ALL.

By the way friends, OUR CONCERT WAS CANCELLED just last SATURDAY.  Sorry for the late announcement. More than that, I feel  sorry for myself and my colleagues. I could not feel anything right now but DESPAIR, DISAPPOINTMENT, and FRUSTRATION. That has been our life for 3 months or more, that we spent our nights rehearsing the piece! The bigger issue is that, I might NOT be able to hold and perform a concert anymore since I will be graduating next sem and will be focusing on my other ACADEMIC plans. I’ll take medicine, btw.

We never expected that our arguments would come to peak and heat up and eventually BURST that led to its total wipe out! NO CONCERT. And someone in authority made that DECISION. We could not do anything but conform to HIM. We cried more than a liter of tears ’cause of the pain. It’s not just a plain performance. It’s much awaited by everyone.

It’s totally devastating.

To this day…

… I woke up early for having been so excited that finally I’m gonna have my first business suit. Hehehe. I like wearing formal attires and wearing make-up. Can’t wait to pair it with a perfect bag! Nyay! Such a freak. And, I asked my mom to bring me more make-up with the package she will give us. hahaha! :D

… I cooked munggo for our lunch. It tastes good (of course, I cooked it!)

… I’m having a headache (only minimal) due to my menstruation which I have waited for a couple of days. Finally it came while ago. :(

… I think of my life for the upcoming semester. I am quite restless and nervous.

— am listening to Up Dharma Down’s ‘Oo’ which my friend introduced me. I like the jazzy style of their music. Better listen to it!

Oo by Up Dharma Down

hindi mo lang alam naiisip kita
baka sakali nga maisip mo ako
hindi mo lang alam hanggang sa gabi
inaasam makita kang muli

nagtapos ang lahat sa di inaahasahang
panahon at ngayon akoy iyong iniwan
luhaan, sugatan, d mapakinabangan

sna’y iyong mamalayan
hindi mo lang alam hindi mo alam

kahit tayoy mgkaibigan lang
bumabalik lhat sa tuwing nakukulitan
bka sakali lng maisip mo naman
akoy nandito lng hnd mo lng alm

Yay! Finally. I got my taste of the outside world after being confided in my house for a week. That was a boredom like hell. I could not really last a number of days just staying in my lair. I could not afford to eat, sleep, watch and do house choirs up in a week (to be the most). I am not a ‘house’ person. Movie marathon could not do me any good either.

So I have my first day of enrollment and I got my 15 units (for the first time) on my first day. This is miracle! During the 4 years of my stay here in UP I could not recall any moment which I had JUST A DAY OF ENROLLMENT coz usually my registration lasts for a week. Good thing I got my status already changed to ‘graduating’ which gives me a top priority for the list students to get their preferred subjects. But you know, it gives me a nostalgic feeling knowing that I have only a sem to at least endure before I leave. That is a bittersweet thing. Everyone wants to finish school but not everyone wants to leave, and I am one of those! :(

I am sad. I want to make the most out of my last sem. I will miss being a student. One more (last) semester but still many memories to make.

Halloween Break

Last week has been kind of hell for me. It was a blazing hot feeling in a fact that I got a soaring 39 degrees temperature after a 3-day overnight stay at my friend’s house. It was constant for several days that I actually couldn’t get up and my head felt heavy so much. I hated it. Good thing my sickness subsided already and I am a lot better now. Hopefully this’ll continue, since tomorrow would be the start of the enrollment week. Back to school again.

Can’t wait to start my errands and go back to normal. My life’s crazy when I’m home. Boring. :( I am looking forward for numerous outside gigs with Kontra-Gapi. Can’t wait for out of towns.

Anyway, just yesterday we went to or aunt’s house to ransack some food from their table. Hahahahaha! Sorry for the word but I do crave for food. I want to gain weight before the school starts. I am that desperate coz I am looking too thin for my figure. I hate skinny body. I abhor it, not like many other  girls.

Dropped by and some updates after Ondoy

It’s quite a long time since I came back and posted something in here. Now I am typing what my mind says. No need to tell but this one’s might be just a random post. So beware if you probably won’t digest what I’m gonna say here.

So, waz up? Waz up with me? Hmmm. The semester’s gonna end by now. Soon, not until Ondoy came and moved the dates of deadlines since acads has to be suspended. It’s just so terrible. I am not happy with everything. The moving of acads calendar, the suspension of classes, the havoc that Ondoy brought, the hassle for everyone, everything.  They’re spontaneous and no one’s really in mind to think this might happen. One word, TERRIBLE!

I am not directly affected by Ondoy except for my 12-yr old brother who slept at SM Centerpoint after being stranded at the establishment ’cause of flash flood. Other than that, I saw my friend’s house ruined by the flood itself. He lives in Marikina and he was one of those wreaked and left with soiled stuff at home. I could not just imagine what happened. It’s so sudden.

Now Pepeng’s coming. I am horrified with what might happen. Our house’s not sturdy enough to withstand strong winds, I feel so. We were just so lucky we were not swept by Ondoy but with Pepeng, I really don’t know. I could not do any better by now but pray for the safety of my family and for everyone.

As much as I want to help in relief operations, I can’t really leave home and leave my dad alone unless I have very important thing to do or if I feel the weather’s fine for a certain day. My Mom’s not here, as you may not know it and I have younger brothers to look after. I know my dad needs my help. So I can’t really stay very late or my dad will worry. Though I went in Brgy. UP Campus last Monday and did some feeding program for the nearby affected areas.

Nonetheless, these are just some of my qualms in life. Not to mention the academics that surely stresses me now (actually it never really fails to stress me out). Our thesis is going on but due to cancelled classes, our survey procedures are quite not going very well. Our feasibility study also tries to meddle over my free hours and pushes me to work and work and work. But the crazy thing about my student life is that I still include my ‘being performer stuff a.k.a My KG life’. Speaking of which, our applicants just finished their recital last Tuesday Oct. 29, 2008 despite the threat to weather. Another thing though, I became lax with my ‘activist mode’ since I could not really evenly weigh things that much during times like these. I became too busy with KG and acads.

If you want to stalk me or get an update, perhaps, I am very active in facebook. Yes, I am. Hehehe :D My url is http://www.facebook.com/jezzstarr. I don’t update my twitter, my multiply, or friendster. Just facebook. I don’t have a secretary to do all of them! I just have my two hands and some ample free time to update my virtual profile. :)

There. Pretty serious post I have here, I guess. I made it as short and as straight as possible and so bear with me. :P

Connect with me? OK?

Before I forget… This is my latest video which was aired in Umagang Kay Ganda last September 24, 2008. :) I was one of the musicians here and the cam was focused on me (yuck, yuck). Hehehe.. Hope you enjoy the video.

and my Graduation Picture for the yearbook. :S
